Biography

Haska Shyyan (Гаська Шиян, born 1980) – Ukrainian writer, translator and poet. She studied Classical Philology at the University of Lviv. In 2014 she debuted with the novel “Hunt, Doctor, Hunt”!. Her second novel “Behind Their Backs” written in 2016 – 2017 and published in 2019 won the European Union Prize for Literature and two Ukrainian literary awards. The book was also included in the 100 of the most important Ukrainian novels list. During the last decade, Haska lives between Lviv, Kyiv and Brussels and works in communication.

Summary

Behind the Back is a novel about a new modern urban class that developed and flourished in Ukraine in the last decade. In particular, it opens a portrait of emancipated professionally successful women who still have to adapt to the rules of traditional values of patriarchal society. It is also a story of couples, families, and relationships torn up by war.

The novel is set in 2014-2016, in the first years of Russia’s war against Ukraine which was marked by the occupation of the Crimea peninsula as well as the territories in the Eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The main characters of the book are a young couple, Marta and Max.

When Max decides to enlist in the Ukrainian army Marta is torn. Before the full-scale invasion in 2022, it was possible not to feel the war in the West of Ukraine. Marta has made a success for herself working for the booming IT industry and enjoyed a cosy life with Max, until his decision.
With Max away, Marta tries hard to fit the model of a war hero’s girlfriend, yet the young woman feels an inner conflict between the social pressure and her rejection of Max’s departure.
