Summary

In the words of a stagehand Charles, the main character and narrator of his latest book, Ch. is a novel about the first real theatre, because in it, the performance lasts until the end – until death. Such theatres are said to appear during the darkest years of tribulation to atone for the sins of mankind. Upon entering the stage of the novel, the actors reenact the story of the torture of Saint Denis, the bishop of Paris, as was historically accurately depicted in medieval performances: they are being burned, whipped, fed to wild beast. This story can be read as an elegy of a father mourning his murdered daughter; as an allegory of purgatory, abundant in references to the Bible, Carolingian culture and fiction; as an imposter prophet’s warning about the end of European culture; or as an ode to cats who were sent to fight the Devil.
