Literature Ireland is delighted to present an evening of readings and conversation connecting the work of four writers from across Europe. European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) writers Sabina Jakubowska (Poland) and Sladjana Nina Perkovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) join award-winning Irish writers Claire Kilroy and Jan Carson (EUPL winner 2019, Ireland).
This event is presented by Literature Ireland in partnership with The European Prize for Literature.
About the writers:
Jan Carson (Ireland)
Jan Carson has published three novels, three short story collections and two micro-fiction collections. Her novel The Fire Starters won the EU Prize for Literature for Ireland 2019. Jan’s latest novel The Raptures was published by Doubleday in 2022 and was subsequently shortlisted for the An Post Irish Novel of the Year and Kerry Group Novel of the Year. Her most recent short story collection Quickly, While They Still Have Horses was published by Doubleday in April 2024.
Claire Kilroy (Ireland)
Claire Kilroy is the author of five novels. In 2023, after an eleven year silence, her fifth novel, Soldier Sailor, about the early years of motherhood, was published to universal acclaim. The Times selected it as the Times Novel of The Year, and it was named a Best Book of 2023 by a number of publications, including The Irish Times and The Guardian.
Sabina Jakubowska (Poland)
Sabina Jakubowska’s first novel for adult readers Akuszerki (The Midwives) was nominated for the EUPL in 2023. The novel also received the title of Cracow Book of the Month (September 2022) and was nominated by literary critics for Paszporty Polityki, an annual Polish cultural award presented by the weekly magazine Polityka.
Sladjana Nina Perkovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Sladjana Nina Perkovic is a Franco-Bosnian journalist and a fiction writer. Her novel U jarku (In the Ditch) received a special mention from the EUPL in 2022. The novel was also listed for the 2021 NIN Award and the “Meša Selimović” Award.
